Sportive Rides
Sportive (Cyclosportive) rides are typically run as a commercial venture. They are not races because UK law requires races to be registered and have permission from the police. That said, many sportive rides have created a "buzz" and attracted the faster riders who often use it as a personal test of their cycling abilities. So they can be very competitive.
There is no overall organisation for sportives resulting in a number of websites that claim to cater to interested users. If you're interested, google "UK sportives" and make your choice
The list below is focussed on Cornwall but also includes other South West events for those prepared to cross the Tamar.
- The Wiggle Cornwall Tor sportive starts at the Bodmin sports centre and comprises 3 rides including the grade 10 (out of 10) 100 miler, a 76 miler and a 45 miler. The next event is to be held on the 29th April 2012 and the website is now taking orders - be quick!
- The Dartmoor Classic sportive runs on the 24th June 2012. This event is selling like hot cakes and it is likely that entries will close soon (as checked on 2011-11-18).
Challenge Rides
End-to-End
Being located in Cornwall means that the End-to-End (LEJOG or JOGLE) is on your doorstep. Below are resources that might help you achieve your goal. Attempting to do such rides needs a great deal of planning together with the sort of training that allows you to go the distance without failure or a serious bout of saddle soreness.
Modern technology can help a lot - a GPS is very helpful when in strange lands (it can also record your trip as well as help you navigate). For the record, the route between Exeter and Lands End really is the toughest part, assuming you're looking for the easiest route (and not, for example, diverting into the Lakes or Wales).
A Google search will find loads of information (some of it is even useful!). But below are a few helpful resources......
